Portion Cotrol
We all know the holidays are right around the corner, beginning with Thanksgiving, which is a huge feast! While, it is okay to treat yourself over the holidays you should also be careful - you don’t want to fall into a rut where you eat so unhealthy and you eat way to much and you feel you have gained too much weight and you end up like every other person setting New Years Resolutions and saying this is going to be your year! Lets not do that again. So how can we prevent that this year?
One important step would be to focus on portion control! Portion control can actually help so much! You are able to treat yourself but also remain healthy and prevent over indulging! Want some tips on how to best control your portions? See below!
If  you are going out to eat at a restaurant be careful. When they bring out a plate of food for you you may think that is okay and that is your meal. But you need to realize that meal is way more than 1 serving size! And after eating lots of the chips, bread, or whatever appetizer you picked out, it is better if you limit your dinner!
Tips for staying healthy at restaurants:

Split a meal - not only will you save money, but you will also eat less!

Order water - skip the calories and sugars in all of the other drinks and choose the healthy options!

Skip the appetizers - your order will already have enough calories in it and be enough for you to have for the meal so skip the appetizer. Again you will save money! I know sometimes it is boring to wait for your order and not have something to snack on but try playing a game or catching up with your family or friends!

When your order comes, ask for a box. Immediately box half of it. Out of sight, out of mind! Not only will you reduce the amount you eat that meal - you will also benefit since you will have a meal for later!

Switch up your sides- ask for a salad, fruits, or veggies for your side instead of fries! Most restaurants offer healthier choices!

Order dressing on the side - you don’t want your salad drenched in dressing! Order it on the side so you can put on a proper amount, while saving yourself some calories!

Split a dessert! You definitely can still have some dessert! Nothing should be off limits! But again- splitting meals saves calories and money!

Tips for staying healthy at holiday parties and feasts:

Drink lots of water - it will help keep you full and give you something to do so you don’t feel like you have to constantly be snacking on all of the goodies in sight!

Eat before you go to the party- have a light snack ahead of time that way you are not starving when you get there! If you are starving you are likely to overdo it!

If you are throwing the party - have healthy snacks! Instead of a candy bowl serve a fruit bowl! It is delicious and will benefit everyone there! Everyone loves fruit!

Skip seconds - fill your plate up the first time with what you want but don’t go back for seconds. Wait and let your meal settle, if you still are truly hungry help yourself to a little more!

Bring your own healthy sides! If you go to a party, offer to bring a dish of your own! Try bringing a salad or a fruit dish or a healthy veggie meal! There are tons of healthy and delicious recipes out there!

These are some tips for controlling your portions! You should also check out the sites provided so you know what portion sizes look like!
Make sure you enjoy yourself at the holidays too! I don’t want any of you to be caught up in dieting or being miserable at the parties! You should enjoy yourself and have fun!

Do you typically set the stereotypical goals of weight loss as your New Years Resolutions?

Are the holidays a tough time for you to stay healthy?
